Glenlivet is one of those distilleries whose malts just keep improving with age. This superb 21yo is an elegant, intricate, sophisticated malt, presented in a very smart wooden box – just don’t drop it on your foot.
Speyside whiskies are known to be fruity and floral, but as the bad boy of Speyside, Craigellachie defies with its oil fired, rich character. Craigellachie 17 Year Old is matured in a mixture of ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks. The bourbon casks bring vanilla, toffee and fudge notes to the fore, and the sherry casks provide richness and complexity.
A super-premium entry in Glenlivet’s range, this has been finished for a couple of years in Oloroso casks – so an extra depth of flavour and silky sweetness is the order of the day. “The Oloroso Sherry influence meshes beautifully with The Glenlivet’s signature sweet, floral, honey and malt notes, giving a nutty spiciness and quite intensely fruity palate, with raisins to the fore. A cut above the standard-issue 12yo, Glenlivet 15yo is finished, as the name suggests, in Limousin French Oak (the same kind that is used for many Cognacs). Expect rich notes of fruit, almonds and sweet spice.
